Suicide is the second leading cause of death for children aged 10-14 and has increased by 32% in the past 4 years for kids aged 15-19. Experts agree that an essential step to suicide prevention is bringing awareness and addressing the stigma associated with suicide because if we can’t talk about it, we can’t prevent it. We need to feel comfortable asking our students, “are you okay?” and know what to do if they’re not.
To address this challenge, we’ve put together a panel of mental health and student safety experts for an online discussion. The panel will provide suggestions on navigating these difficult conversations with students and parents. They’ll discuss:
- How to foster an environment where a student feels safe to share that they’re not okay
- How to help parents move from a reactive mentality to one that’s proactive
- The importance of taking students seriously – and what to do next if a student is at risk of self-harm or suicide
